Configuring Zoiper to Make An Office Call

Some company still using an installed office desk phone for each employee. This could be a problem if you’re away from your desk and your colleague can’t reach you to discuss things. Another problem is when your job requires you to online at all times, making calls from your office’s number. But what if one day you got sick? or any reason that makes you absent from work? thankfully, there is an app that can help you solve this problem. In this post, I will show you how to use Zoiper to make  an office call directly from your cellphone.

Quoting from it’s official website, Zoiper is the free soft phone to make VoIP calls through your PBX or favorite SIP provider. Available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 8, Windows, Mac and Linux. To make it easier for you, this app lets you use your office number on your cellphone. To make calls you only have to do a little setup and connected to the Internet. Pretty convenient, huh? well in my case, I’ll be using my favorite SIP provider. The provider will ask your public IP to be registered and after that they will give you credentials to “allows” you to make and receive a call. If you’re under a network which is other than your office’s, you’ll never be able to use this service.

For those who were away from their office, they can still use their carrier data, only if they can connect through VPN to their office network. I wrote an article about connecting your phone’s carrier data to a PPTP Server, here.

If you’re wondering how to get these information you can try contacting your SIP provider. Or you can ask your IT guy to get them for you. The format should be look like this:

username@provider = 021XXXXXX@172.16.1.1

And then, Zoiper will ask you about an authentication required by your provider. Just skip this one and you’ll be fine. Now let Zoiper “scan” the IP and find the most suitable configuration. If your screen gives you red at all options, there might be something wrong about your credentials, could be a misspelling or a typo.

After all credentials are correct, click Finish and your cellphone is now acting like your office desk phone. Try to make a call to your friend’s number and it will show your office’s. Stay professional while you’re away!
